Turning Waste into Opportunity: Youth Lead Plastic Innovation in Tamale

Plastic is everywhere — in the streets, in our rivers, and in our daily lives. What many see as mere waste, others now see as an opportunity.

In Tamale, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), in collaboration with adminex ghana, launched an extraordinary competition aimed at rethinking plastic waste. The challenge: young Ghanaians were invited to show what plastic can become when viewed through the lens of creativity and vision.

Six schools rose to the occasion: St. Cyprian, St. Bernadette’s, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Basilide’s, St. Joseph’s, and St. Mary’s Technical Institute. The results were both impressive and inspiring — students transformed discarded plastic into raincoats, trash collectors, flower vases, jewelry, and a host of other inventive items.

Anna Wasserfall, Country Representative of KAS in Ghana, emphasized that recycling is not only about protecting the environment — it is about shaping a healthier and more sustainable future for all.

Emmanuel Peterson, representing adminex ghana, took the message further. In a country where youth unemployment remains high, he highlighted recycling as a real avenue for opportunity — a source of jobs, entrepreneurship, and a new way of thinking. “Think entrepreneurially,” he urged the students. “Turn waste into possibility.”

This competition proved that meaningful change begins at the grassroots — with curiosity, courage, and a single idea.

Thanks to the joint efforts of KAS and adminex ghana, Tamale is becoming greener — powered by young minds thinking beyond limits
